JOB SUMMARY:

Volunteers of America Colorado is looking for a licensed Health Care Worker (HCW) to volunteer at one or two weeks of summer camp at Camp POSTCARD this summer.

Camp POSTCARD is a FREE overnight summer camp for incoming 5th and 6th grade students from the Denver/Aurora area who have demonstrated leadership skills and might otherwise not have the opportunity or resources to attend a residential summer camp. Throughout their week at camp, these youth will see leadership in action through their counselors, all of whom are affiliated with local law enforcement agencies. They’ll build their own leadership skills through teambuilding activities, challenge courses, daily reflections, and more. All the while experiencing a week in the mountains at the YMCA Estes Park Center facilities.

The Camp HCW must be one of the following: a licensed physician, a registered nurse, a licensed practical nurse, a licensed physician’s assistant, a certified nursing aide or an individual who holds current certification in emergency medical services. All health care workers must work within their scope of practice, including the ability to work independently or with required oversight.

The Camp HCW provides services primarily for our campers and staff throughout the week. Duties include checking in camper medications on the first day of camp with counselors and other staff, dispensing prescribed medications to campers, providing appropriate medical treatment for children or adults as needed and managing all medical and first aid supplies.

Session 1: June 21-28 | Training 6/21-22, campers arrive 6/23-28

Session 2: July 19-26 | Training 7/19-20, campers arrive 7/21-26

The Camp HCW should have experience with children of diverse populations. Spanish speaking is a plus, but not required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age, licensed, and currently registered (or have reciprocity) to practice in the state of Colorado
  • Preference will be given to health care workers who have field experience with diverse populations.
  • The Camp HCW is responsible for providing basic health assessments and First Aid treatments to campers with special needs and our staff.
  • Medication Administration to campers (Counselors WILL NOT be administering medication to campers except for emergency medications until HCW arrives)
  • Must be able to lift 35 lbs. and walk 1 mile over uneven terrain possibly multiple times a day
  • Pediatric experience and a working knowledge of communicable disease transmission preferred
  • Must have current CPR and First Aid certification

 

Responsibilities:

  • Attend orientation on the first day of camp.
  • Be present at the registration of designated camp session to check in, record individual problems, check in medication and note medications
  • Conduct inventory of medical supplies
  • Establish and follow appropriate medical routines including record keeping in the daily medical log, disposal of medical waste, managing and safeguarding medications, and utilizing approved standing orders
  • Keep First Aid Kits properly supplied, refill cabin kits if needed
  • Keep accident/incident reports that can be used for risk management assessment
  • Prepare a final inventory at the end of camp
  • Monitor health of staff
  • Carry a 2-way radio provided by Camp POSTCARD to easily communicate with other staff and counselors
