Description: Assists in the daily management and supervision of the classroom and children, as directed by the Teacher/Lead Teacher.

Accountability:  The assistant teacher reports to the lead teacher or Center Director

Minimum Qualifications:  ECE 101 or 3 credit hours of basic Child Development or Elementary Education or a Colorado level II Credential or higher or CDA.  Must be willing to obtain Child CPR and First Aid within 3 months of employment and Universal Precautions within 30 days.  Must pass all State Required background checks and receive positive reference checks from previous employers or other professionals in the field.

Minimum Skills needed:  Basic knowledge of Early Childhood Education and Developmentally appropriate practice.  Effective communication skills, including reading and writing skills.  Ability to work as a team member of a classroom teaching team and the center team.  Ability to get down to the child’s level, interact with and supervise young children.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervises children during all activities. Consoles children when social, academic, or adjustment problems arise.
  • Prepares instructional aids/materials for classroom activities, stages tables for the day
  • Ensures the appearance cleanliness and safe environment of the classroom are appropriate at all times
  • Assists children with meal times and clean up
  • Assists with all center/classroom paperwork, e.g., student accident reports, classroom head count, NAEYC classroom portfolio, Children’s portfolios
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, center events, and parent meetings as requested
  • Assists with preparation and implementation of classroom lesson plans/programs, organization, and schedule
  • Accepts temporary work assignments in the event regularly scheduled personnel are not available, e.g., takes full responsibility for the classroom in the absence of the Teacher/Lead Teacher, or may write, submit and implement a weekly lesson plan
  • Ensures that all classroom/outdoor equipment is in good working condition and is used/maintained properly
  • Meets all state and Colorado Shine requirements for the position
